Nissan Adds ‘Beautiful’ Noise to Make Silent Electric Cars Safe

With little noise from the engine, electric cars may be a danger to blind pedestrians who cannot hear them approaching. To address those safety concerns, transportation agencies in the U.S. and Japan may mandate artificial sounds for the vehicles. The authors check in with Nissan engineer Toshiyuki Tabata, who is working on recreating engine noise for a new generation of quiet cars.

Cash for Clunkers Program Proves Effective

The ‘Cash for Clunkers’ (otherwise known as ‘CARS’) Program is controversial, expensive, and… effective! The impact on Automobile sales has been noticeable, but will be short-lived.  What will last longer are the new relationships formed between new car dealers and auto recyclers, as they have been brought together by discussions about what to do with the trade-in autos.  Discussions about what to do with older cars has brought welcome attention to the important work of the nation’s auto recycling industry.
